2023 Winter Term — On February 17th, 14 DEA club members learned how heat gets produced and distributed from an expert Facilities Operations and Management (FOAM) guide as they explored a series of underground steam tunnels. This on-campus field trip took students under the Green to visit the secret passageways that keep all of campus warm during frigid winter months. The tour included a presentation on how the cogeneration heating plant operates and Dartmouth’s efforts towards a campus energy transition, peek inside the plant itself, and walk underground to the hot-water conversion facility at Sudikoff.

2023 Winter Term — Around 50 students crowded in One Wheelock on February 16th for energy Kahoot, an evening full of team-based learning and pizza. This collaboration with Collis Governing Board brought many new faces to the club. We hope to see you in future DEA meetings—all are welcome!

2023 Winter Term — On January 19th, students enjoyed TukTuk and lively conversation about energy with veteran natural gas venture project manager and current advisor for energy startups, Will Fraizer ‘78. An alum of Dartmouth and MIT, Will has a wealth of experience in the energy industry, ranging from natural gas venture projects and development, to investing in new energy startups. He was previously the Operations Engineering Manager for Freeport LNG, where he supervised the Engineering group and was the senior technical manager for the company, and Deputy Site Engineering Manager, for Chevron Australia's Gorgon LNG Project (Australia's largest natural resource and natural gas export project). He currently works for Houston Exponential and Eunike Ventures, advising energy-focused startup companies that are ready to deploy their technology, through a partnership with mid-scale energy producers.

2022 Fall Term — On Saturday, October 22nd, the DEA hosted its first ever Energy Hackathon! The 25 student participants explored topics ranging from energy and cybersecurity to arts and humanities for energy and sustainability messaging. In teams of 3-5, participants designed creative and equitable solutions such as gamifying social carbon accounting and incorporating block chain into the smart grid to tackle the world’s most pressing energy challenges. Everyone had a blast researching, learning, and presenting an energy-related topic of their choosing to the college community.

2022 Summer Term — Did you know that 90 percent of energy used by an incandescent bulb is lost as heat, or that the number one fuel source in U.S. electricity production is natural gas? During Week 8 of the term, DEA members participated in 22X Energy Trivia at Collis One Wheelock—an exciting evening event packed with free Domino’s, new knowledge, and fun! The top two Kahoot winners, Paul Cornell ’24 and Sebastian Fernandez ’24, won $20 Lou’s gift cards.

2022 Spring Term — In late May, a group of students went out to Norwich, VT to visit Vermod Homes. Vermont, as one of the states with the oldest average housing stock across the country, faces challenges in retrofitting old homes that are energy-intensive and inefficiently weatherized, especially given the region’s cold winters. Ashley Andreas, Project Manager for Vermod, walked the students through the company’s modular homes factory and manufacturing pipeline. She detailed the energy-efficient heating and cooling systems built into the homes, designed to keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter, with minimal energy consumption required. Overall, students were fascinated by the homes’ affordable price points, family-friendly design, and ability to help homeowners save on utility bills while also being climate-conscious.

2022 Winter Term — On Saturday, January 29, Stephen Doig ‘82, an advisor at the Irving Institute for Energy & Society, kindly opened up the energy-efficient, off-grid rural New Hampshire home that he and his wife Marion designed. In conjunction with the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC) Environmental Stewardship (ESD) team, the DEA traveled through snowstorm weather to see incredible engineering and design features in action. The students were all inspired by the level of engineering detail and precision that went into such a well-designed home that effectively combined form, function, aesthetics, and sustainability in mind.

2022 Winter Term — In January of 2022, more than 36 DEA members got a sneak peak of the brand new Arthur L. Irving building before it opened to students and staff in March of 2022. On the tour, Senior Project Manager James Pike cataloged the new building and its energy efficient features.

2022 Winter Term – As part of DEA’s mission of connecting students to the wider Dartmouth community, we invited young alumni working in the energy industry to share their perspective and experience with us. Meghan Duff ‘15, Stewart Wood ‘18, and Jordan Swett ‘19 made an appearance in the first ever DEA career panel.

2021 Fall Term — We spent time discussing Bill Gates’ Book: How to Avoid a Climate Disaster. We foused on chapters dealing with infrastructure to work in concert with the Irving Institute's fall term theme "Perspectives on Buildings and Energy".

2021 Fall Term — We sent a a group of students to tackle the MIT energy Hackathon down at MIT in Boston for the weekend.

2020 Winter Term — Our club had an exclusive tour of the heating plant that powers most of the town and College facilities. Apt for the harsh winters in Hanover, students were able to see first hand the heating system above ground and underground. Members were fortunate to walk through tunnels that span across campus that contain some of the energy infrastructure.

From March 23rd-26th, a cohort of 8 Dartmouth students in the DEA, co-sponsored by the Irving Institute for Energy, attended the club’s inaugural Spring Break Energy Immersion trip in Washington D.C.. The students attended the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) Policy Forum, having the opportunity to converse with White House officials, senior leaders in renewable energy companies, and Capitol Hill policymakers. This was followed by meeting Dartmouth alumni working in a variety of energy careers, including Norman Bay ‘82, former FERC Commissioner, Jay Matson ‘91, branch Enforcement Chief at FERC, Ben Szuhaj ‘19, a consultant with Deloitte’s Doblin team, and touring the net-zero carbon emissions headquarters of the American Geophysical Union.
